Distended stomach

An increase in the girth of the stomach usually is the indication of distention of the stomach. This is the result of the increased abdominal pressure inside the stomach. The effect of pressure in the stomach is the pushing effect on the abdominal walls or lining which is the cause of distention of the stomach. A lot of symptoms are associated with the distention of the stomach. Most patients complain of a bloated stomach which is true because the stomach had actually increased in size. The main reasons for stomach distention are gastrointestinal problems such as intestinal gas, or in severe cases, such as flui accumulated inside the stomach that is not properly drained, and the enlargement of the organs in the surrounding area of the abdomen.

Distention of the Stomach Causes and Symptoms

As previously mentioned, bloating of the stomach is the common symptom of stomach distention. This is due to intestinal gas which is in turn is the result of swallowing gas that enters the mouth region, or either in certain conditions like indigestion of foods that are deposited into the stomach. Most patient complain about this problem after a meal, but is likely common when overeating, or with those who exhibit intolerance to certain type of foods and indigestion. Those with issues in gaining weight or conditions such as obesity may experience stomach distention more often than those who have normal weight and normal eating habit. With regard to women patients, they experience this medical issue when they are having their menstrual cycle or just immediately before their menstruation occur.

When stomach distention are recurrent or persistent over a period of time, this may be a major issue of concern. Enumerated herein are the major health issues related or leading from distention of the stomach.

• IBS or irritable bowel syndrome

• Abominal tumor or growth of tumor tissues in the area

• Cysts or tumor in the ovary

• Cancer of the ovary

• Fibrocysts in the uterine area

• Accumulated fluid in the peritoneum cavity or ascites

• Obstruction of bowel

• Constipation or inability to move bowels

• Parasitic infection in the intestines

• Allergy and intolerance to certain types of food

• Celiac disease

Certain serious illnesses like congestive heart failure, peritoneal carcinomatosis, and liver cirrhosis can cause accumulation of fluid in the peritoneum cavity. Along with this condition may occur flatulence, bloated stomach, and abdominal pain. Other symptoms include diarrhea, constipation, weight loss, vomiting, and bleeding in the rectal area. When symptoms occur such as bloating and gas problems or flatulence, these are most like be the outcome of indigestion and intestinal gas that accumulates as a result of improper or incomplete digestion.

Diagnosis and Treatment

Stomach distention is a medical condition that needs to be addressed immediately to avoid serious complications that may arise due to neglect of such symptoms over a period of time. Most likely, the physician examining the patient would recomment series of tests to rule out the cause of distention of the stomach. It is important to determine if the distention is caused by gas or other serious medical condition. If the symptoms of stomach distention is persistent for a considerable period, the diagnosis may be comprehensive tests like X-ray of the stomach, CT scan, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and ultrasound of the abomen in order to rule out if malabsorption is present and intolerance to certain food types.
