Antibiotics for sinus infection

According to studies, infection of the sinus will respond quite well to some antibiotics. The bacteria obstructing the sinus cavities may be destroyed if you make use of the following antibiotics for sinusitis:

Amoxicillin: This is also known as amoxil. Therefore, Cotrim is recommended as an alternative. This kind of antibiotic is made by mixing the potential of two antibiotics namely sulfamethoxazole and trimethoprim. Just like the humans, bacteria will also need folic acid which is a kind of vitamin B in order to survive. Bacteria will not only take it from external sources, but they will also make it internally and without it, they will fail to exist. Cotrim has the capability to impair the bacteria’s ability to produce folic acid. This aids in eliminating the bacteria and in curing the infection.

Cefuroxime: This is popularly known as ceftin. This medicine is advisable for serious forms of sinus infections. Strong antibiotics like ceftin are usually necessary in acute sinusitis wherein the symptoms will appear all of a sudden and are serious. This kind of antibiotic is good for patients who do not respond well to dosage of amoxicillin. This belongs to the class of Cephalosporins and is capable of destroying the bacterial structure of the cell wall and then kills the bacteria later on.

Azithromycin: This is also known as Zithromax and belongs to the macrolides family. Bacterial sinusitis and also other infections of the respiratory tract can also be prescribed with Zithromax. The primary purpose of giving azithromycin will be to halt the growth of bacteria and prevent the infection from becoming worse. It is a common fact that bacteria can produce proteins which is important in their growth and survival. With azithromycin, the bacteria will not be able to produce proteins. Instead, this can weaken the bacteria helping the body to deal with the infection in an effective manner. Furthermore, it will be a lot easier for the immune system to deal with the weakened bacteria which are eliminated in the end.

Moxifloxacin: As part of the fluroquinolones class, moxifloxacin or Avelox is a new addition to the list of antibiotics for sinus infection. It has been noted that bacteria are capable of multiplying through replication of DNA. In addition, the bacteria will mutate on their own making them resistant to some antibiotics. In order to put a stop to these bacterial activities which will result to serious complications, it is always advisable to use Avelox. Due to its potent antibacterial activity, persistent sinus infections are eliminated. Individuals with serious form of chronic sinusitis can find a significant amount of relief from the Avelox dosage.

Dosage of Antibiotics for Sinus Infection 

More often than not, patients with sinus infections are advised to take 500mg of antibiotic tablet either once or three times in a day based on the severity of the infection.  But for stronger antibiotics like the cefuroxime, the dose can begin from 250mg to be taken two times in a day for a predetermined period of time.

A lot of complaints have already emerged regarding the dosage of antibiotics which do not work in relieving the symptoms of sinus infection. This would mean that the sinus problem is because of a viral infection and anyone who has it should consider other alternatives for the treatment of sinusitis because of a virus attack. Furthermore, the medicines do not function in case a person has been using antibiotics for a long time already.  This is quite common in patients with chronic sinusitis.  Prolonged use of antibiotics can make the bacteria resistant to medicines and as a consequence, the infection will no longer respond to the use of antibiotics.
